- Sighting your home or commercial building properly takes advantage of the natural lay of the land to provide the best views and sightlines. Boyd's input on sighting your structure takes into consideration how the earth that's available on the chosen site can be used in the most cost-effective manner.
- Excavation begins when proper access has been established, the land has been cleared, and the future walls of the building have been located with the use of a laser level. In our area buildings must be built on frost footings 4 feet in the ground. On top of these footings, poured concrete walls or a poured concrete building pad, or concrete block walls are constructed.
- Backfilling--the restoration of dirt along the foundation--is required soon after concrete walls are dry to protect the excavation from frost and weather.
- Finish Grading may include more backfilling of the foundation if the dirt has settled. Proper grading, an important step in home construction, controls and directs drainage away from the foundation, driveway, and outdoor living areas.
